On September 3 and 4, AWS announced regional expansions for several Graviton-based EC2 families, allowing teams in these locations to access newer Arm-based generations without routing traffic to distant regions.

These updates are geographic expansions of existing lines. AWS first made M9g and M9gd generally available in June, followed by C9g and C9gd later that month. For the newly added Graviton5 regions, purchasing models include On-Demand, Spot, Savings Plans, Dedicated Instances, and Dedicated Hosts.

Storage and migration limits

The C8g and C9g lines provide compute-optimized capacity, while M9g covers general-purpose workloads. The M9gd and C9gd variants include local NVMe SSD block storage tied directly to the physical host, making them suited for temporary scratch space, caching, or intermediate processing rather than persistent storage.

AWS claims that Graviton5 instances, built on the sixth-generation Nitro System, provide up to 25% better performance than corresponding Graviton4 instances. That figure is vendor-reported rather than an independent benchmark, and real-world gains depend on the specific workload.

Because Graviton instances rely on Arm64 architecture, migration viability depends on architecture-specific dependencies, build pipelines, regional pricing, and workload behavior. Furthermore, regional availability does not establish unconstrained supply; cloud engineers should verify active service quotas, local pricing, and runtime compatibility before shifting production workloads.
